Compostable Tableware Should Be Plastic-Free: Don’t Fall for Greenwashing
Share
As environmental awareness continues to rise, more consumers are turning to compostable tableware as a greener alternative to single-use plastic packaging and cutlery. However, some moulded fiber products on the market, although made from paper pulp, are coated with synthetic plastic materials. These plastic linings prevent the product from fully composting. This often leads to a misleading perception known as greenwashing, where consumers believe all moulded fiber tableware is eco-friendly. In reality, only plastic-free disposable tableware without synthetic coatings can decompose safely and return to the earth without leaving pollution behind.

The Problem with Plastic-Coated Fiber Tableware
Some moulded pulp-based disposable plates, cups, and cutlery on the market are coated with thin layers of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), or similar synthetic plastics to improve water and oil resistance. Despite this, they are often still marketed as “biodegradable” or “compostable”— which gives consumers the false impression that these products are truly sustainable.
While the paper or plant-fiber base may be compostable, the plastic coating is not. These plastic-lined tableware contaminate composting systems, slow down natural decomposition, and can leave behind harmful microplastics. In some cases, only specialized industrial composting facilities can break them down under high heat and controlled conditions—facilities that are not widely available to most households or communities.

What to Look for in Authentic Compostable Tableware
Authentic compostable tableware is made entirely from plant-based materials, such as bamboo fiber and bagasse (sugarcane waste). These materials naturally break down under composting conditions without leaving behind toxic residues or plastic fragments. Among these, bamboo fiber tableware stands out for its strength, fast biodegradability, and low environmental impact throughout its lifecycle.
To ensure you’re choosing truly eco-friendly disposable tableware, look for reputable third-party certifications like BPI, TÜV Austria, or OK compost HOME. Avoid vague marketing terms such as “green” or “eco-friendly” that lack transparency about materials and composability.

Plastic-Free Compostable Tableware by ECOVEIL
At ECOVEIL, our bamboo fiber tableware is designed to be recyclable, compostable, and fully biodegradable. Coated with plant-based materials, it offers excellent water and oil resistance—without the environmental harm of plastic. Our plastic-free design ensures each product breaks down cleanly and safely after use.
To go further, we’ve integrated Biological Waste Processor (BWP) Technology—a biosynthesis method that uses lactic acid bacteria to turn kitchen waste, agricultural residue, and used tableware into nutrient-rich fertilizer. This innovation helps close the loop, allowing our compostable tableware to return to the earth and support a truly sustainable future.
